UPDATED information: Week of Oct. 17

Updated information on South Street work for the week of October 17:

National Grid’s contractor continues work on their electrical vault by the Glen Street/South Street intersection. Over the weekend, there was a lot of concrete road bed to remove around the head structure and by the end of the day on Sunday, all concrete road bed and the locking collar of the head structure had been removed.

We apologize for the noise. The amount of jackhammering and/or machine impacting should be limited from here on out.

The next step of the construction process will be to make a separation between the old wall and the head structure to jack the head structure of from the wall, at which time it can be removed.

The second step will be to obtain the correct elevation of the new structure, so that the new head structure on the vault can be formed in place and secured with concrete.

The third step will be to remove the forms inside the vault and pour flowable fill and road bed back to sub grade.

The entire process will take two and a half to three days. The time frames of work should be from around 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (a regularly scheduled day), though it will depend on the delivery schedules of the concrete and new head structure. If things do run late, it should not run long into the evening.

Traffic advisory: Now through Sunday, Oct. 23:

The approximately 300-foot portion of South Street that runs from the Glen Street/South Street intersection to the area by New Way Lunch and the South Street parking lot will be closed as National Grid repairs the underground electrical transformer vault underneath South Street (as mentioned above). The remaining portion of South Street is open, and entrance to the South Street parking lot and New Way Lunch is accessible by the open portion of South Street.

Entrance access to the businesses on the north side of South Street (North Country Coffee Cafe and New Way Lunch) is also available by entering off Elm Street into the South Street parking lot.

Entrance access to the businesses on the south side of South Street (JP Bruno’s, etc.) is accessed by entering off Elm Street or Glen Street into the Elm Street parking lot.

Special advisory for Monday, Oct. 24 and Tuesday, Oct. 25:

As the project nears completion, paving of the entire length of South Street begins at the western section by Rite Aid and Union Square. On Monday and Tuesday, October 24 and 25, there will be limited traffic access and no parking along the entire length of South Street.

Thank you for your continuing cooperation!
