Updated traffic advisory

City is moving into the next stage of  the South Street project —
installing new sidewalks &  curbs and street lighting –therefore  the following advisory is  being issued.(SUBJECT TO CHANGE DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS AND OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES )

NO PARKING BOTH  SIDES OF SOUTH STREET-2 WAY TRAFFIC REMAINS
Beginning Wed August 31th and continuing through the Fri Sept 9-
So that two way traffic can be maintained on South Street there will be No PARKING on both sides of South from School Street/Rite Aid to Glen

CLOSURE OF SIDEWALK ALONG SOUTH SIDE OF SOUTH STREET
Beginning Monday August 29 through Friday Sept 9th the sidewalk along the south side of South Street from Rite Aid area/ School  Street to Glen will be closed.

Access will be available to the front entrance of each building on South Street

PUBLIC PARKING is available in the Elm Street Lot and South Street Lot .

CROSS WALKS
Pedestrians  should use the intersection crosswalks at South and  Elm and South and Glen—Crosswalks  will be not be available in the middle of South Street for crossing purposes.

Traffic advisory: Aug. 25-on

Effective Thursday and Friday, August 25 and 26 and the week of August 29:

TRAFFIC

Normal traffic pattern from the South Street/Broad Street intersection to the South Street/Elm Street intersection

Alternating traffic from the South Street/Elm Street intersectino to the South Street/Glen Street intersection

PARKING

On-street parking will be permitted from the South Street/Broad Street intersection to the South Street/Elm Street intersection

On-street parking is intermittently permitted on both sides of South Street from the South Street/Elm Street intersection to the South Street/Glen Street intersection

SIDEWALKS

The sidewalk on the south side of South Street from the South Street/School Street intersection to the South Street/Elm Street intersection will be closed beginning Wednesday, August 31.

ACCESS TO BUSINESS ENTRANCES REMAINS OPEN!

Traffic Advisory: South Street re-opened

South Street reopens ahead of schedule:

Due to an extended workday and the efforts of the work crews from the City’s contractor, the City’s Department of Public Works/Water and Sewer crew and National Grid’s contractor, the entrance from Glen Street to South Street will be reopened for traffic, effective at 8 p.m. on Monday, August 22.

Beginning Tuesday, August 23, there will be alternating traffic on South Street from the Glen Street/South Street intersection to the Elm Street/South Street intersection. This is due to new drainage and storm lines in this area. There will be normal traffic flow from the Broad Street/South Street intersection to the South Street/Elm Street intersection.

The City thanks the businesses and motorists for their understanding and cooperation over Monday’s closure of South Street.

Special traffic and parking advisory

MONDAY AND TUESDAY, AUGUST 22 & 23

6 A.M. TO 7 P.M.

On Monday and Tuesday, August 22 and 23, from approximately 6 a.m. to 7  p.m., the following traffic and parking advisory is in place. Efforts will be made by the contractors to complete this work on Monday, but notice has been made to include Tuesday.

Note that sidewalks remain open and access is available to all business entrances!

  1. The entrance to South Street from Glen Street will be temporarily closed so that National Grid can undertake work in conjunction with the South Street and Glens Falls National Bank expansion project.
  2. South Street is closed from the South Street/Glen Street intersection to the Broad Street/South Street intersection (by Rite Aid). No parking is permitted along this portion of South Street.
  3. The intersection of South and Elm Streets is closed to traffic so that new manholes, storm lines and laterals can be installed.
  4. South Street will be open for local traffic only from the Broad Street/Pine Street intersection to the Broad Street/South Street intersection (by Rite Aid) and from the New Pruyn Street/South Street intersection to the Broad Street/South Street intersection (by Rite Aid).

Senator Schumer visits Glens Falls

Mayor Diamond has announced that Senator Schumer will be in Glens Falls tomorrow (Wednesday, August 17) at 3:30 p.m. The event, originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m., is now confirmed for 3:30 p.m. He will tour the South Street project and following will make remarks at the Empire Theater Building located at 11 South Street.

Mayor Diamond stated that he is very pleased that the Senator is back in our City to see the improvements underway on South Street.

It is expected that at the Empire Theater, refreshments will include not only coffee from Sue Stone’s North Country Coffee Café but also some Dirty John’s hot dogs from Pete Gazetos’ New Way Lunch will be on the menu!

Parking advisory: Wed. 8/17

Important announcement:

For Wednesday, Aug. 17, only, there will be no parking on either side of South Street from School Street to Glen Street from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Traffic/parking advisory: Week of Aug. 15

Access to all business entrances remains available!

  • Alternating two-way traffic will occur on the portion of South Street that runs from School Street to Elm Street during the day as the storm line and sanitary manholes are installed.
  • No parking is permitted on the south side of South Street from School Street to Elm Street during this time. During the day, no parking is permitted on either side of the street while the storm line is being installed.
  • The parking lot area in front of Rite Aid remains inaccessible.
  • Sidewalks on the south side of South Street from School Street to Elm Street are closed.

Traffic/parking advisory: Week of Aug. 22

  • No parking is permitted on either side of South Street from Elm Street to Glen Street while storm lines and sanitary manholes are installed.
  • Sidewalks are closed on the south side of South Street from Elm Street to Glen Street later in the week of Aug. 22.

We are underway!

“Planning for the South Street project is done and now it’s time for the work with Rifenburg Construction Company to commence!” says Glens Falls Economic Development Director Ed Bartholomew. Construction began today.

Traffic access to and from New Pruyn Street is limited. Additionally, there will be limited access to upper South Street (by Rite Aid) to New Pruyn Street with alternating one-way traffic. Access, however, will be available to the Medical Building at 90 South Street.

No parking is permitted on South Street from New Pruyn Street to School Street (by Rite Aid).

Additionally, no parking is permitted in front of the Rite Aid parking lot area in the designated 6 spaces at intersection of Broad and South Streets until further notice. This area will be fenced off.

$1.7 million South Street project starts Aug. 1

The $1.7 million South Street project is underway as of Monday, August 1, 2011. Glens Falls mayor Jack Diamond has released the four-month schedule, which is posted on this website.

Mayor Diamond stated that is the City’s pledge:

  • To maintain flow of traffic and access to stores and businesses during this project.
  • That South Street will remain open for business!
  • Property owners and businesses will be informed throughout this project. The mayor has indicated that this website will provide updated information as the project progresses.

Hours of construction are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The mayor and members of the Common Council want to thank the businesses and owners on South Street for their understanding and cooperation. Mayor Diamond also noted the financial assistance of nearly one million dollars in federal funds for this project through the efforts and assistance of Senator Schumer.

Timeline

Renovations run from August to November 2011.

Work is done from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

The project begins the week of August 1, beginning at the intersection of South and New Pruyn Streets near Hudson Avenue. Work progresses toward the intersection of South and Glen Streets.

Work commences on the south side of South Street, beginning at New Pruyn Street. In September, when work is completed on the south side, it will switch over to the north side of South Street at the intersection of South and Broad Streets by Rite Aid and Union Square.

  • Week of August 1
    • South side of South Street
    • Beginning at the intersection of South and New Pruyn Streets near Hudson Avenue and continuing for the next 4 to 5 weeks, work crews will be removing existing storm drainage lines and replacing with new lines, installing new water line and replacing existing manhole covers. Sewer lines will be repaired where necessary and existing sidewalks will be removed and replaced. Work will progress on this side of the street all the way to Glen Street.
  • Week of September 9
    • North side of South Street
    • For the next 4 to 5 weeks, work will shift to the north side of the street, commencing by the intersection of South and Broad streets by Rite Aid and the Union Square Complex and it will progress toward Glen Street, replacing curbs and sidewalks and installing new trees, replacing some existing trees.
  • Mid-October
    • For 3 to 4 weeks, street lighting, streetscaping, park benches, landscaping, tree planting and paving will be underway.
  • End of November
    • Project completion
